Starts: September 4, 2017
Ends: June 1, 2018
The Colchester Business Association (CBA) awarded an annual scholarship to a local graduating high school senior who intends to study business in college. The scholarship is for $1,000 and is used to go toward educational expenses. The 2017 recipient is Bacon Academy graduate Alyssa Smelser, who just completed her senior year and is a resident of Colchester.

Alyssa plans on attending MCC to start her education before moving to a four year college, where she will be majoring in Marketing in the business field. Alyssa said, "I would like to become a marketing executive for an up and coming company to really have the full experience of getting that company known and well branded." Alyssa also stated that, "I feel very lucky to be able to have the honor of receiving this award. I know how tough the decision was to decide on who to present it to and therefore I am very appreciative for the generous gift towards my education from my home town of Colchester and more specifically the Business Association." Alyssa continued to say, "I feel very lucky to be able to have the honor of receiving this award. I know how tough the decision was to decide on who to present it to and therefore I am very appreciative for the generous gift towards my education from my home town of Colchester and more specifically the Business Association." She lives with her parents and three sisters.

Thank you for the hard work and effort of the 2017 CBA scholarship chair Ginger Pensa of William Raveis Liberty Real Estate. Ginger Pensa and the CBA wish to extend their gratitude to committee members Ash Bashir, Greg Barden, Jack Faski, and Lori Faski who reviewed all of the impressive applicants.

The 2017 scholarship was awarded for the eleventh year in honor of Loren Marvin and Donald Standish. Marvin was a founding member of the CBA that was very active in the business community throughout his lifetime. Standish was a CBA volunteer that was an integral proponent of "Shop Colchester First!" in support of the local business community. The scholarships fund is created from CBA raffles that take place at monthly member dinner meetings. Raffles prizes are donated by CBA members.

The CBA hosts monthly dinner meetings and produces events that are designed to help promote, support and encourage business development in Colchester. Their motto is: "Shop Colchester First!" Many of their events focus on bringing member businesses together with the community such as the 57 Fest, Business Showcase, Scarecrow Contest, and the Tag Sale on the Green.
